The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested former chief of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), General Paul Valentino Phiri (Retired), on five counts relating to abuse of office and dealing in terrorist property.
According to the press release issued by ACB Public Relations Officer Jacqueline Ngongonda, the arrest was made on today, October 1, 2026 in Lilongwe.
The release says the charges arise from allegations concerning Phiri’s role in facilitating illegal arms trafficking in June and July 2025.
“ACB has arrested former Chief of Malawi Defence Force, General Paul Valntino Phiri (Retired), on five counts relating to abuse of office and dealing in terrorist property,” reads part of the statement.
The Bureau says General Phiri is currently being cautioned and is expected to be taken to court thereafter.
The ACB says further details will be made provided as appropriate.
General Phiri served as Commander of the Malawi Defence Force until his retirement.
