FAM denies abandoning Scorchers after viral social media transport pictures

By Abdul-Rahim Kamwana:

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has clarified circumstances surrounding pictures circulating on social media showing some Malawi National Women’s Football Team players waiting for transport to their respective homes.

The images of the Scorchers, which sparked concern among fans online, suggested the players had been left stranded after returning from national duty in Zimbabwe for the second leg of the Olympic Qualifiers.

In a media release dated 15 October 2026, FAM said transport arrangements were made for all players upon their arrival at both Bakili Muluzi International Airport in Blantyre and Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe.

The Association moved to assure the public that logistical support was provided for the team’s return.

FAM, however, explained that some players opted to be dropped off at designated stages, where they preferred to arrange their own transport to their respective homes.

According to the statement, this created the impression that they were waiting without assistance, when in fact, they had chosen alternative arrangements after being provided for.

The Association therefore stressed that the players were not abandoned, as transport had already been provided for their safe movement from the airports.

FAM added that as part of its Football Transformation Agenda, it remains committed to prioritising the welfare, safety and well-being of players and all key stakeholders, and will continue to ensure that appropriate logistical arrangements are made for national teams during official assignments.
