As Malawi marks 60 years of independence, Leader of Opposition in Parliament, George Chaponda has lamented the country’s slide into authoritarianism, corruption, and economic stagnation.

Writing on his Facebook Page on July 7, 2024, Chaponda criticized the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) for “dragging the country back to the dark days of single-party rule.”

Chaponda cited the MCP’s alleged abuse of law enforcement, suppression of demonstrations, and failure to tackle corruption as evidence of a broader democratic decline.

The opposition leader also slammed the government’s economic management, pointing to soaring inflation and food shortages as a stark contrast to the progress made under previous administrations.

Chaponda’s remarks come as Malawi celebrates six decades of independence from British colonial rule. The milestone has been marked by mixed sentiments, with many citizens expressing disillusionment with the country’s current trajectory.
