The European Union Delegation to Malawi and Music Crossroads Malawi have announced plans to host the 2025 Directors’ Merit Awards (DMA) on December 12, 2025, at the EU Ambassador’s Residence in Lilongwe.
Now recognized as a flagship event, the DMA celebrates excellence in music education, creativity, and civic engagement among young Malawian artists. This year’s edition carries the theme “Peace, Inclusion, Justice, Governance, and Citizen Responsibility”, aligning with Malawi’s 2025 electoral calendar to promote youth participation in democracy and social dialogue through music.
The program manager for Music crossroads Malawi Angellah Zulanga said the Directors’ Merit Awards are part of Music Crossroads Malawi’s broader mission to nurture socially conscious musicians through the Music Crossroads Academy.
She said the students at the Academy receive hands-on training in music composition, performance, and production, while integrating civic and peacebuilding themes into their artistic work.
According to Zulanga , during the event, participants will compete in band-based performances, reimagining both local and international songs and presenting original pieces inspired by key social themes.
” A panel of judges representing the University of Malawi, the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), the Musicians Union of Malawi, Music Crossroads Alumni, and the media will assess performances based on creativity, discipline, and technical skill.” She added.
Zulanga further explained that the outstanding bands and individuals will be recognized for their talent and dedication. The top three bands will receive both cash prizes and professional studio recording opportunities.
She also revealed that the Individual awards of MWK 50,000 each will also honor the Best Guitarist, Drummer, Pianist/Keyboardist, Bassist, Vocalist, and Wind Instrumentalist.
This year’s ceremony will feature performances from celebrity artists and Music Crossroads alumni, who will also serve as mentors to the young contestants. The event will be live-streamed to engage audiences across Malawi and internationally.
According to organizers, the partnership between the EU Delegation and Music Crossroads Malawi reflects a shared commitment to youth empowerment, inclusive growth, and cultural diplomacy.
The Royal Norwegian Embassy, HI-FI Electronics, and Times Group are the other key partners for the 2025 event .
