Service delivery has resumed in Mzuzu City following the call-off of the strike by council employees over salary increments and dissatisfaction with some top management.
Mzuzu City Council Trade Union Chairperson Hudson Komani Mnyenyembe has confirmed that, together with the Secretariat, they will travel to Lilongwe on Monday to meet Local Government officials over their concerns.
”We had a meeting with the Secretariat and resolved that next Monday we will travel to Lilongwe with two agendas on the table. The first is to discuss the proposed 25 percent salary increment. The second is to remind them that we do not want our Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Director of Administration,” he said.
The employees want their salaries reviewed, saying they were last increased in 2023.
However, Government is offering a 10 percent pay hike, which the employees have rejected, saying it is too small.
They are also demanding the immediate removal of Chief Executive Officer Gomezgani Nyasulu and Director of Administration Patrick Chipeka Phiri, claiming the two have not been helping to address the council’s problems.
Mayor Chiyembekezo Moses is among those who intervened in the stand-off between the employees and the Secretariat.
The employees began the industrial action on Tuesday this week. They blocked with tree branches the entrance to the Civic Offices and the offices of the CEO and the Director of Administration.
Mzuzu City Council Spokesperson Macdonald Gondwe declined to comment on the matter.
