National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has committed to continuing its support for football in the country through its sports sponsorship, part of which goes towards the Malawi Women’s National Football Team.

The announcement was made in Lilongwe on Friday during a breakfast engagement at Sunbird Capital organised by the bank to celebrate the Scorchers’ success at WAFCON.

The team finished as runners-up and automatically qualified for 2027 Women’s world Cup to be staged in Brazil.

Speaking during the engagement, NBM plc Corporate Affairs Manager, Akossa Mphepo-Hiwa, congratulated the players, saying the bank will continue to support the team as it continues to make history and prepares for the World Cup.

“This sponsorship has given us memorable impact, and walking with the Scorchers has given the nation pride. As a bank, we are proud to have been part of this story. We look forward to supporting the team as they continue to put Malawi on the map.”

“Between us and our partners, Football Association Malawi (FAM), the relationship is beyond sponsorship. That is why we will continue to support Malawian sports development, even in different aspects of the game,” said Hiwa.

She further said plans for the bank’s World Cup sponsorship will be announced soon.

In his remarks, FAM President Fleetwood Haiya thanked NBM plc for sharing the vision of developing women’s football in the country, particularly for supporting the Scorchers at a time when the team was struggling with funding.

“We appreciate the gesture by NBM plc for their support of women’s football, especially at a time when they showed interest before the team achieved this milestone. They saw the future and believed in our transformative agenda. For their sponsorship and commitment to supporting the Scorchers, we say thank you,” said Haiya.

Haiya further thanked Malawians and football lovers for the warm welcome they gave the Scorchers.

Last year, NBM plc announced its sports sponsorship programme, which supports Under-23 grassroots football, the women’s football league and the women’s national team.
