NBS Bank has supported the paediatric cancer ward at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) with adjustable hospital beds and cancer medication as part of its corporate social responsibility programme.
The bank says the support follows an engagement with QECH to identify areas where its contribution could make a meaningful difference to children receiving cancer treatment.
The paediatric cancer ward was identified as having significant and immediate needs, including the condition of hospital beds used by patients.
According to NBS Bank, the existing beds were difficult to adjust and move, making it harder for healthcare workers to carry out some procedures. Children undergoing lengthy treatment were also required to remain in a fixed, flat position.
The bank is therefore supporting the replacement of the beds with adjustable and movable ones to improve comfort and make it easier for medical teams to care for patients.
In addition to the beds, NBS Bank will provide cancer medication to support the treatment and recovery of children in the ward.
The bank says the intervention is part of its broader commitment to community development under its “We Care A Little More” initiative, which aims to go beyond financial services and respond to genuine community needs.
NBS Bank says supporting children with cancer is also an investment in Malawi’s future, as children receiving treatment today have the potential to become future professionals, entrepreneurs, parents and leaders.
“A better hospital bed may seem like a simple intervention, but for a child spending days or weeks in hospital, comfort and dignity matter,” the bank says.
The bank hopes the contribution will ease the burden on children, their families and healthcare workers at QECH.
“Today, we are not just handing over beds and medical support; we are investing in comfort, dignity, treatment and, most importantly, hope,” the bank says.
