Mulanje Magistrate court on Wednesday sentenced a 21-year-old man, Alfred James, to nine months Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) for intimidation, contrary to section 88(1)(a) of the Penal Code.

James was found guilty of beating his mother and threatening to poison the drinking water, intending to harm all household members.

It is reported that on April 18, 2024, Alfred came home drunk, confronted his mother and assaulted her before leaving the house.

He returned later that night and threatened that he would poison water and food intending to cause harm to everyone in the household.

State prosecutor Constable John Chikuni urged the court to impose a meaningful sentence to protect parents from such abuse and serve as a deterrent to other youths exhibiting similar behavior.

Passing sentence, Senior Magistrate Gloria Mwatiwamba noted that, while the defendant actions were serious, a lenient sentence was warranted considering that he is a first offender, young, and had been cooperative throughout the process.

She also noted that Alfred had expressed remorse for his actions.

Alfred hails from Mbalewanga village, TA Sunganinzeru in Mulanje district
