Court remands Nigerien accused of drug trafficking

A 30-year-old drug suspect from Niger named Osman Muhammad who was arrested by Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) Police on April 5th, 2024 has been remanded at Maula Prision.

Muhammad was found in possession of 64 Diamorphine drug tablets weighing 942.47 grams, according to KIA Police Public Relations Officer Sub Inspector Sapulain Chitonde Lee.

“He attempted to export the drugs without permission by concealing 51 tablets in his bags and 13 tablets in his anus while about to board a Germany-bound Ethiopian Airlines flight.

“The police intercepted him at the main entrance after conducting a physical search on him and his luggage,” he said

Appearing before the Senior Resident Magistrate Montfort Misunje sitting at Mkukula Court in Dowa, Muhammad applied for bail as the prosecution asked for more time to investigate the matter before the suspect takes plea.

While he granted the prosecution their wish, Misunje denied the suspect bail.

The case was adjourned to Friday, May 10 2024.

Muhammad is facing charges of being found in possession of dangerous drugs and attempting to export the same, contravening regulation 14 as read with regulation 19(1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
