Three people have died after being stricken by lightning at different places in Kasungu.

The incident occurred on October 17, 2023.

According to Kasungu Police Station public relations officer, Sub Inspector Joseph Kachikho, the first incident happened at Chibwana village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Kaomba  where two people died.

“The two are identified as Christina Phiri, 60 and her niece Flira Nkhoma aged 10. It is reported that around 15:00 hours when it was raining seven people sought refuge in one house, where Christina and her niece were in the bedroom and four were in the seating room and one was in another room.

“Suddenly a bolt of lightning struck them and fell unconscious and were found by Mercy Banda who was in the other room. They were rushed to Kasungu District Hospital where the two were pronounced dead upon arrival and the four are admitted,” he said

In a related development Eunice Chamaza Banda, 13, from Chilankuma village in the area of Traditional Authority Kaluluma died after a lightning strike.

“Eunice and two others were hit whilst inside the house that caught fire in the process. They were all taken to Nkamenya Mission Hospital where Eunice was pronounced dead upon arrival and the two are admitted at the hospital,” he said
