The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has elected Chambulanyina Jere as its new First Deputy Secretary General and Owen Chomanika as Second Deputy Secretary General, filling positions left vacant following the resignation of Gerard Kazembe and Uchizi Mkandawire.
The elections were conducted during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the party’s headquarters in Lilongwe.
The meeting also resolved to establish three additional party regions, bringing the total number of MCP regions to nine. Of the new regions, one has been established in the Southern Region, while two are in the Central Region.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, MCP Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda said the changes are aimed at strengthening and rejuvenating the party.
Banda said the party has learned lessons from its recent electoral loss and is reorganising itself to improve its performance and better serve Malawians ahead of the 2030 elections.
He said the newly elected officials will fill positions that had remained vacant, adding that the party’s leadership is ready to work together to rebuild the MCP.
MCP President and former President Lazarus Chakwera attended the meeting, alongside Vice President Catherine Gotani Hara, Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda, Campaign Director Moses Kunkuyu, Leader of Opposition Simplex Chithyola Banda and Director of Youth Steve Baba Malondera.
