A 6-year-old girl has died in a road accident in Kasungu after being run over by a vehicle.

She has been identified as Madalo Richard from Chitete Village in Traditional Authority Kaomba in Kasungu.

Kasungu Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Joseph Kachikho said he accident which happened on Thursday near Lilongwe Daily Depot within Kasungu Town along unnamed earth road behind Kasungu Chipiku Shop within Kasungu Town, involved unregistered motor vehicle IT 4247 Mitsubish canter 3 tonner, driven by Mackleyad Chitembeya.

“The vehicle was being driven from the direction of Chitete going towards Chipiku. Upon arrival at Lilongwe Daily Depot due to speeding, the driver failed to control the vehicle where he hit and run over a young pedestrian who was crossing the road from left to right.

“Following the impact, madalo sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kasungu District Hospital. Meanwhile, Police have arrested the driver of the vehicle, Chitembeya, for the charge of causing death by reckless driving and he will appear before court soon” he said

Kachikho said Police are therefore advising road users to adhere to all road traffic rules and regulations to avoid preventable road accidents.
