President Peter Mutharika has congratulated ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Blantyre City Chigumula BCA-Club Banana Constituency legislator Sameer Sulemanfor his election as as Speaker of the National Assembly.

He has also extended the goodwill message to Mulanje Bale constituency MP, who has been elected First Deputy Speaker and Machinga East MP Esther Jolobala for clinching MP for the position of Second Deputy Speaker.

“When I nominated the three Honourable members for these positions, I did so with full confidence in their leadership qualities and capabilities, which they have consistently demonstrated through various portfolios they have held over the years.

“In Honourables Suleman, Musowa and Jolobala, I  see a capable team to steer deliberations in the house for the betterment of our mother Malawi. To you Honourable Speakers, this is your moment to serve and shine. Be assured of my full support as you assume office as heads of the legislative arm of government. Once again, congratulations and best wishes,” Mutharika wrote on his official Facebook Page.

Suleman secured 134 votes, defeating Peter Dimba, Member of Parliament for Lilongwe Phirilanjuzi, who garnered 85 votes.

Meanwhile, President Peter Mutharika is expected to open the First Meeting of the 52nd Session of Parliament on Friday, 31st October, 2025,  at 10:00 a.m.
