National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc says it is ready for the return of the Women’s Premiership League, with the 2026/27 season set to kick off on September 19 .
The league’s return is expected to create more opportunities for female footballers to compete regularly, develop their talent and strengthen the growth of women’s football in Malawi.
Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, NBM plc Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager Akossa Mphepo-Hiwa said the Bank is excited about the return of the competition and remained committed to supporting initiatives that empower women and girls through sport.
“Women’s football continues to show great potential in Malawi, and the return of the League is an important step in giving players the competitive environment they need to grow. We are pleased to play a part in creating that opportunity,” said Mphepo-Hiwa.
Mphepo-Hiwa said NBM plc’s interest in the competition goes beyond supporting matches, with the Bank keen to see the league contribute to the development of players, clubs and the wider women’s game.
“We would like to see a league that gives players the chance to showcase their ability, clubs the opportunity to build competitive teams and, ultimately, Malawi a stronger foundation for the future of women’s football,” she said.
Mphepo-Hiwa further said the League would also play an important role in preparing players for international competitions, including the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“Having the girls compete regularly at domestic level will help them stay active, gain valuable match experience and remain competitive as they prepare for the World Cup. We believe a strong domestic league is important for building a stronger Malawi team,” she said
National Women’s Football Association(NWFA) president Adelaide Migogo said the return of the league would boost the Malawi Scorchers’ preparations for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“We are excited. This really shows that NBM plc has confidence in women’s football and the girl child. The girls will be active in preparation for the World Cup,” said Migogo.
The 2026/27 NBM Women’s Premiership League will feature 10 teams, including three debutants, Chitoliro Heroines, Pact Women’s Football Club and Rumphi Sisters.
