Sunbird Nkopola and Nyasa are heading for a tight finish in the Southern Region Beach Soccer (SRBS) FAM Cup, with just two points separating the top two teams.
According to standings released on September 27, 2026, Nkopola lead the table with 51 points from 18 matches after winning 17 games and losing one.
They have scored 152 goals and conceded 38.
Nyasa are second on 49 points from 18 matches, with 16 wins, one loss and one victory-plus (V+). They have scored 133 goals and conceded 33.
The two teams have opened a significant gap over the chasing pack, with third-placed Makokola Beach Eagles on 36 points.
Namiassi United are fourth with 29 points, followed by Chipoka Rangers on 26, Gateway on 24, Michesi on 22 and Bayanda on 21.
At the bottom of the table, Pamptengo have 12 points, Wella nine and Black Eagles six from 19 matches.
Southern Region Beach Soccer Association secretary Joseph Banda said the league has improved this season, with 11 teams taking part compared with six last season.
He said more fans are attending games and teams are also following the rules better than in previous seasons.
However, Banda said the league still faces challenges, including a lack of sponsorship for mini-tournaments, inadequate training grounds, limited coach training and a shortage of beach soccer balls.
He said the title race remains open because teams still have matches to play.
“We are at a break because some teams have contributed players to the national team. After the national games, we will resume the games,” Banda said.
Banda said two teams have one game remaining, while the other nine teams have two games each.
Nkopola Sunbird Beach Soccer chairperson Frezer Makinka Phiri said the team is determined to remain at the top and win the championship.
“Our intention is to remain in the lead and grab the championship. The team is able to do better because of rigorous training and support from our sponsor Sunbird for their unwavering financial support. We are also indebted to the hard work of the players,” Phiri said.
Malawi’s national beach soccer team was established in 2015 and made its international debut at the COSAFA Beach Soccer Championship in Seychelles.
Malawi later qualified for its first Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations finals in 2022.
At club level, Sunbird Nkopola won the 2025-26 FAM National Beach Soccer Championship after beating Peninsula Stars 4-1 in the final.
With the SRBS FAM Cup now entering its final stage, Nkopola and Nyasa remain separated by just two points in what promises to be a close finish.
