Phiri Granted K10 Million Bail
Former Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander General Paul Valentino Phiri has been granted bail by Senior Resident Magistrate Shukrani Kumbani.
The court has ordered Phiri to pay a K10 million cash bail bond and provide two sureties, each bonded at K20 million.
Phiri is facing charges of dealing in terrorist property, contravening procurement procedures and abuse of office.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) alleges that Phiri facilitated the smuggling of weapons to rebels in Sudan.
Phiri was arrested by the ACB following investigations into alleged illegal arms dealings.
The charges relate to alleged activities involving the procurement and movement of firearms, which the ACB says were connected to rebels in Sudan.
