The 2026 tobacco marketing season has officially closed after 21 weeks of trading, with Malawi selling 144.5 million kilogrammes of tobacco valued at 286.1 million US dollars.
According to the Tobacco Commission, the crop was sold at an average price of 1.98 US dollars per kilogramme as of 9 September 2026.
Speaking to the Atlas, Tobacco Commission Public Relations Officer, Telephorus Chigwenembe, said the season was largely successful despite challenges, particularly high rejection rates for auction tobacco.
Chigwenembe attributed the smooth marketing process to continued engagement with stakeholders, which helped secure timely payment of farmers’ proceeds and ensured uninterrupted sales.
He added that the Commission will conduct a clearance sale next week to allow tobacco currently at rehandling centres to be sold.
The Tobacco Commission is also expected to publish a comprehensive review of the 2026 marketing season and outline future plans once all market activities are concluded.
