About twenty kids from Kamuzu Institute for Sports Athletics club on Saturday participated in the annual Standard Bank Be More Race courtesy of non governmental organisation Mpira Mmudzi Mwathu.
MMM paid for the kids’ registration fee as well taking care of all travel costs to and from the venue of the marathon.
Speaking in an interview Mpira Mmudzi Mwathu founding Director Chimango Munthali said his organisation decided to sponsor the kids as one way of providing an opportunity of exposure to the kids.
“We saw an opportunity to give these youngsters exposure and experience by participating in a running competition, while also allowing them to interact with various stakeholders from different fields. We are thrilled about this initiative as it aligns with our goal of making different sports accessible to the youth”, he said.
According to Munthali as an organisation they excited to see that they have made an impact on the lives of young people.
“Seeing the excitement from the kids, we feel proud to have contributed to the future of athletics in Malawi”, said Munthali.
And on her part Stella Peter who is one of the coaches for the club was all excited and has since hailed Mpira Mmudzi for the gesture.
“That gesture will act as a motivation to our kids as they have rubbed shoulders with some of the country’s best athletes.We believe this gesture will encourage our kids to be reporting for training regularly so that one day they might have an opportunity of representing the country on the international scene just like many of Malawi’s established athletes.
Peter has however appealed to well wishers to assist the club with other basic necessities like training kits for the kids.
During the main race 23 year old Chikondi Mwanyali of Civo Athletics Club emerged the overall winner after clocking 1 hour 06 seconds and has since been rewarded with 1.650 Million Kwacha.
Standard Bank introduced the Be More Race in 2017 as one way providing a platform for people from different walks of life to interact while exercising.
