Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) leader Atupele Muluzi has thrown his weight behind Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman, saying Parliament must remain independent and free from political interference.

Writing on his official Facebook page, Muluzi commended Suleman for taking what he described as a firm position on an issue central to Malawi’s democracy and Parliament’s constitutional oversight role.

He said Parliament is not an extension of the Executive but a separate arm of government mandated to represent citizens, make laws and hold public institutions accountable.

Muluzi said concerns raised by Malawians over the performance of government departments and public institutions should be investigated transparently and without fear or favour.

He further argued that the Constitution empowers Parliament to establish committees and regulate its own procedures.

“Therefore, I believe the Speaker and Parliament should be allowed to perform his constitutional responsibilities without political intimidation or interference,” he said.

Muluzi said, as UDF president, he supports the principle of an independent, courageous and accountable Parliament.

“Our democracy cannot be strengthened if Parliament is expected to remain silent whenever scrutiny becomes uncomfortable,” he said.

He added that Malawi needs institutions that work and a Parliament willing to fulfil its oversight responsibilities.

“Let the truth be established through proper, transparent and evidence-based parliamentary inquiry,” Muluzi said.
