National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has awarded five scholarships and six awards to best-performing students at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KuHeS) through its Mo Excellence programme.

The awards are part of NBM plc’s broader commitment to providing 59 scholarships and 41 Vice Chancellor’s List awards to students in universities across the country, including the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), University of Malawi (UNIMA), Mzuzu University (MZUNI), Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), and Catholic University (CU).

Speaking during the presentation on Friday, NBM plc Chief Executive Officer Harold Jiya, said the sponsorship of students is part of the bank’s belief in the crucial role education plays in the development of human resources.

“We believe that education is a foundation of economic development, as it helps to break cycles of poverty, uplift families, empower communities and help in nation building. So, we believe helping these students will help them to finish their education while empowering the best and brightest,” said Jiya.

Jiya further said an educated nation would contribute to the development of the country, adding that the number of beneficiaries is expected to double each year.

In his remarks, Atusaimwe Kasola, a student at KuHeS, thanked NBM plc for its timely intervention.

“I warmly welcome this support, as financial support is hard here at the university. Hence, we thank National Bank of Malawi plc for this support,” said Kasola.

Concurring with Kasola, KuHeS Vice Chancellor MacPherson Mallewa expressed excitement over the support, describing it as a game changer for students.

“We have received two types of support today; those that demonstrate excellence in their performance and another one which is the scholarship. These are the kind of support that students require. So, to have National Bank of Malawi plc support us gives us gratitude, excitement and hope that this is the kind of help needed from the corporate world,” said Mallewa.
