Silver Strikers has returned to the summit of the TNM Super League after defeating Extreme FC 2-1 in a midweek match played at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.
Silver Strikers returned to winning ways after enduring losses to Mighty Mukuru Wanderers in the league and an exit in the FDH Bank cup at the hands of Moyale Barracks while Extreme FC suffered a late 1-0 loss to Dedza Dynamos during the weekend.
Chimwemwe Idana was first to attack breaking free through Extreme FC’s left flank only to rush a short as the defence was taking shape with striker Atusaye Nyondo out of sight.
The deadlock came in the 5th minute when Idana’s cross fell for Nyondo whose shot was blocked by Trevor Kalema and deflected towards Patrick Macheso for the finish.
Extreme FC maintained a tight grip on the match, as striker Babangida Ishaya efforts in the 8th minute was saved by goal keeper, Charles Thom. Ishaya went knocking again a moment later after receiving a through ball from Justice Honde only to short off target.
The home team’s defence continued to offer resistance as they danced to the tune of Idana who kept wiggling through releasing passes to his mates. Strikers concluded the first half with 13 chances while Extreme FC was limited to 3.
Extreme FC came out of recess guns blazing quickly launching 2 lethal attacks within 5 minutes to set Silver off balance.
The much deserved goal was scored in the 53rd minute after Tony Phiri exchanged passes with Honde whose cross from the right flank fluffed out of Thom’s hands and second half substitute for Extreme Fc, Innocent Chipolopolo pounced on for the equalizer.
Substitute, also had a hand in Silver’s redemption when Stenie Davie was the assist provider for Idana’s tap in goal after an excellent team build up play from Maxwell Paipi, Idana, Nyondo and Macheso.
In a post-match interview, Assistant Coach for Strikers Taonga Chimodzi described the victory as positive response following a difficult period.
“It was a good game, we read it well and made the right changes after their equalizer,” said Chimodzi.
Meanwhile, Coach for Extreme FC, Elvis Kafoteka reiterated that his team still has a chance to remain in the top flight league.
“If we start better in the second round, the whole complexion will change, it’s unfortunate we are losing games we are not meant to lose,” said Kafoteka.
Silver Strikers has 28 points after 13 games while Extreme FC is 16th on the table with 6 points from 14 matches.
