Umodzi Holdings Limited, the government owned company that runs Umodzi Park Resorts in Lilongwe, has reported a profit after tax of K1.2 billion for the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year, up from K1.0 billion in the same period last year, a growth of about 14.5 percent.
Unaudited results for the quarter ended 30 June 2026 show total revenue rose 50 percent to K8.1 billion from K5.4 billion, marginally above budget, supported by strong contributions from meetings and conferences, rooms and other revenue, together with increased food and beverage activity. Gross profit climbed about 40 percent to K4.9 billion, while EBITDA rose 19 percent to K2.2 billion.
Revenue from rooms, food and beverages, conferences and event hosting all showed year on year gains, with management attributing the improvement to a renewed push to nurture and expand corporate and government client engagement, and a series of high profile events hosted at the venue during the quarter.
Operating costs increased by 53% from K1.9 billion to K2.9 billion mainly due to increase in volume of business while overheads increased by 61% from K1.4 billion to K2.3 billion due to increase in utility bills and maintenance expenses necessary to enhance guests experience.
Under the new leadership of Chief Executive Officer Hon. Kamlepo Kalua, management said the results reflect the early impact of a broader repositioning strategy focused on operational discipline, staff development, and consolidating Umodzi Park’s position as the largest hotel and conference venue in the country and the only facility with the scale to host state functions and international conferences. Central to this strategy is a deliberate focus on human capital motivation, with Kalua’s leadership anchored on inclusion and an open door policy that management says has strengthened staff engagement across the business.
“Our focus remains on consolidating these gains through continued investment in service quality, digital transformation and strengthening partnerships with both government and private sector clients,” he said.
The strong quarter follows recognition on the continental stage, with President Hotel being named Best Leading Hotel in Malawi at the World Travel Awards held in Zanzibar on 28 August 2026.
Looking ahead, management expects the operating environment to remain challenging, but remains confident its diversified business model will support sustainable growth through the rest of the 2026/27 financial year.
Umodzi Holdings Limited owns Umodzi Park Resort, comprising the Presidential Villas, the President Hotel the first five-star hotel in Malawi, Bingu wa Mutharika International Convention Centre, the largest in the land, and associated hospitality facilities at the Bush Bar and outside catering services at meetings and events.
