The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) has pledged to support Malawi’s efforts to stabilise its macroeconomic situation by mobilising international financial institutions and development partners to support the country’s development priority areas
UNECA Executive Secretary and UN Under-Secretary-General, Claver Gatete, made the commitment when he met Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. George T. Chaponda, on the sidelines of the Africa Mid-term Review of the Doha Programme of Action in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 9th September, 2026. Gatete said UNECA would help bring partners and financial institutions on board to support Malawi, particularly in addressing challenges arising from unsustainable public debt, widening fiscal deficits, declining foreign exchange reserves and the high cost of accessing foreign currency for essential imports such as fuel.
Dr. Chaponda said the Mutharika Administration is doing everything possible to recover and stabilize Malawi’s economy and accelerate economic growth, but stressed that the country needs the support of strategic international partners to accelerate the recovery.
“Malawi is determined to restore its economic stability, but we cannot do it alone. We need the support of partners such as UNECA to mobilise resources and investments that can help us rebuild our economy and create opportunities for our people,” said Dr. Chaponda.
Gatete further acknowledged Malawi’s strong agricultural potential but noted that agriculture alone cannot currently bridge the country’s foreign exchange deficit.
He assured Dr. Chaponda that UNECA would work with Malawi to mobilise partners and ensure that their support is aligned with the country’s development priorities.
